Yesterday, Wade joined high schools from across Griffith for some fast, action packed three on three Basketball at the Griffith Regional Sports Centre.
The matches were played half court in 10-minute, high energy bursts. Boys and girls teams from Marian Catholic College, Verity Christian College and MRHS Wade played in the Years 7 – 8 and Years 9 – 10 tournaments over the course of the day.
Wade pitched four teams in total: two 7 – 8 boys teams and two 9 - 10 boys teams. Our 9/10 “teal” team managed to make the grand finals against Marian, losing unfortunately, by a single point.
Meanwhile, our 7-8 “teal” team also made it to the grand finals against Marian. The match went to two minutes overtime after a draw. When the two minutes overtime failed to yield a winner, the match devolved to a shoot off from the three-point line. Marian ultimately bested us.
Jayden Cafe was a big point scorer in the 7/8 division and Archer Vaessan was a sublime point guard. Xavier Favero was unstoppable on the court, demonstrating a natural affinity for the sport.
Javier Bruce was strong in the 9/10 division and Ben Virago’s accuracy as a shooter is to be commended. Ashton Menegazzo and Tyrone Granger were also huge assets to the Wade teams.
The comp was an effort to promote three on three basketball after its debut in the Summer Olympics. The sport has a different dynamic to traditional basketball, with the short rounds and small teams lending themselves to fast, dynamic gameplay.
Thank you to Isabel Forbes from Basketball NSW for putting together this great day of basketball for the kids.
