The Quad today was a hive of activity with our Year 9 Commerce students hustling up business for Commerce Day.
Commerce Day challenges students to put their heads together, formulate and pitch a business, market it and then run it at a profit over a single lunch time.
This year, we had three teams go head-to-head. There was cake stall Sugar Crafter, chocolate covered strawberry vendors Chocolate Paradise and Jackpot, a gaming operation.
It’s been a frantic week of marketing with Wyatt Carter hard selling preorders for strawberries in the staff room and Monday’s gale force winds blowing away the students promotional posters. The stakes were high for the students, with Mrs Sergi’s only stipulation being that the groups make their $100 budget back.
“Commerce day is a great opportunity to do some project-based learning,” explains Commerce teacher Kara Sergi, “Students get to create a business, implement a business plan and learn from their mistakes. It’s a great trial run for Australian Business Week in Year 10.”
The Year 9s will now count up their profits from Commerce Day and evaluate and refine their business model in the coming weeks.
