Year 8 Science have been exploring the way the body works through dissection this term.
The class have cut their way through lamb hearts, lamb kidneys and chicken wings to better understand how they work. They’ve also been identifying the major components of each of these body parts and determining their purpose.
The students have observed ventricles in hearts, nephrons in kidneys and have traced the flow of blood through these organs. They’ve also had fun manipulating tendons and muscles in chicken wings to make them move.
“Dissections give a real-world context to biology,” explains science teacher Thomas Chapman, “Diagrams in a book can only take a student so far. To really understand the way these systems work, they need to get up close with the organs that make them function.”
