Last week both our boys and girls under 15s soccer teams faced off against Marian Catholic College in the Bill Turner Cup.
The girls were the first match of the day. Marian scored two quick goals while we were still finding our footing. Our Wade girls did manage to hit back in the second half with Lilla Menegazzo capitalising on a mistake from Marian with an excellent chase through, regather and finish in the bottom corner of the net.
Much of the game was spent in Wade’s half. Our players managed to mitigate Marian’s offence however, keeping the final score down to 4 – 1.
Abbey Farrell was ferocious in defence and read her opposition well while teammate Allana King showed tireless commitment across the whole park. Abby Stefanin also managed to make some excellent saves in goal.
"The MRHS – Under 15 Wade girls showed real determination at both ends of the field and never gave up,” recalls coach Manjot Singh, “With that kind of effort, I’m confident they’ll return even stronger next season."
The Wade boys started with a bang after Ahrmi Favero headed the ball into the goals off a perfectly placed corner kick. We held the lead for most of the first half before Marian struck two goals in quick succession before half time.
The Wade boys sustained mountains of pressure throughout the second half with the game hanging in the balance. Dustin Krzucs took it upon himself to bring the score to 2-3 (Marian’s way) in the final five minutes of the game. Marian’s final goal in the last moments of the match brought the final score to 4 – 2, a number that made the Catholic College’s victory look more comfortable than it actually was.
Dustin Krzus was described as the most dangerous player on the field and Ahrmi Favero’s intense physicality and command of the defence was also praised. Wyatt Carter’s courageous and well-timed slide tackes stopped several of Marian’s incursions dead in their tracks.
"The MRHS – Under 15 Wade boys showed strong quality both in defence and attack, and fought hard right until the final whistle,” explains coach Manjot Singh, “I have no doubt they’ll come back even stronger next year."
Congratulations to Marian on their win and well done to both of our teams!
