Year 7 demonstrated the properties of density by dying saline solutions and then carefully pouring them together, creating an eye-catching rainbow liquid.
The experiment was part of the class’s unit on matter which develops their understanding of the properties of solids, liquids and gases. It also explains the properties of these various states through the particle model.
“Density relates to weather patterns, wind, ocean currents,” explains Science teacher Matt Ingles, “It affects a lot of these students’ lives so this is a fun little way to explore subject.”
The unit lays the foundation for a deeper exploration of chemistry. The class will move onto study cells and then forces in the coming months.
