Murrumbidgee Beat Kooringal in Buckley Shield

MRHS Beats Kooringal

Yesterday, the MRHS open rugby league team carried their winning streak by taking down Kooringal in the Buckley Shield 30-12. It was a big win for the team and means the boys will now face off against a South Coast side in the coming weeks.

Playing off in Paramore Park, the game got off to something of a rocky start with a 12 all tie after the first half. Though Eddie Tiana scored from a crafty offload from Peter Mariner and Evahn Tauaneai barged over from close to the line, there were a couple of errors that kept Kooringal in the game.

The grind continued into the first ten minutes of the second half, with some big tackles from the Piva brothers keeping Kooringal at bay. But then the floodgates opened and Isaac Railo scored off a classy back line play. Eddie Tiana crossed for his second after pouncing on a loose ball shortly after and Wilson Nabete topped the day off with an intecept in our own 10 meter line and ran the entire field to score.

MRHS captain Riley Serafin received man of the match for an outstanding performance leading the team. It is also worth noting that he also didn’t miss a conversion during the day.

The win crowns the team Riverina Champions and means they will now face off against a south coast team before progressing to the finals of the combined high schools University Shield competition.

"It was pleasing to see the boys perform under a bit of pressure and come out with the goods,” says coach Adam McCann, “Credit to their determination and constant efforts at training leading up to the games."

Congratulations boys and good luck in the South Coast!
