Wade Boys and Girls Play AFL Gala Day

AFL Gala Day

Both our boys and girls open AFL teams played schools from across the zone for the first round of the AFL comp at the Exies Sport Club yesterday.

Our boys started the day with a win against Marian Catholic College. Any ego they took from the victory however was soon beaten out of them by a particularly strong St Francis side. The day wound down with a win against Temora.

Captain Beau Cooper’s leadership was a force to be reckoned with throughout the day. There were also plenty of players transplanting their talents from other codes with NRL player Nate Sergi proving swift on the flank and Ali Ali Zada using his soccer skills to great effect.

“The boys played in great spirits,” recounts coach Riley Holand, “They also showed great sportsmanship and were happy to lend Temora players when asked.”

Meanwhile, across the field the girls had somewhat less luck. Marian, St Francis and Temora all bested the Wade. Their matches against Temora and Marian were quite close however, with our girls losing to Temora after two of their kicks rebounded off the post.

Lana Simcoe’s kicks saw her tally up the most points on the team. Megan Callcut also demonstrated a natural ability for breaking through defenders and Ruby Kenny might as well have been playing two positions with her ability to seemingly be everywhere at once.

“The day was about getting out there and having a go,” explains coach Daniel Bozic, “They went in with a lot of nervous energy, but they played fearlessly and carried themselves well on the field.”
