Ag Students Learn About Pigs in Bedgerabong

Pig Education Day

At 6am last Wednesday, Mark Duncan and 8 agriculture students set off to Bedgerabong (near Forbes). The students were there to learn about all things pig related at the town’s annual pig education day.

The day was host to approximately 180 students from 11 schools. It was an opportunity for agriculture students across the state to hear from experts from as far afield as Queensland. Presentations were given on artificial insemination, ultrasound, feed, pest control, marketing, auctioneering and butchery.

Some of the highlights of the day for the MRHS students were the auctioneering, where some of the more shy students were brought out of their shell to run an imaginary auction, and surprisingly, washing the pigs for competition. The cleaning of the animals, which was only scheduled for half an hour, occupied the curiously keen students for about 75 minutes. In total, the students would have washed about 15 pigs.

The final highlight of the day was lunch, with students, enjoying roast pork sandwiches and bacon and egg rolls before embarking on the two and a half hour trip back to Griffith.
