Year 8 Science Cell Models

Cell Models

Last week, Year 8 science submitted models of a variety of different cells made from a whole host of both conventional and unconventional materials. The project was part of the living systems component of the curriculum.

The project asked the students to create of a cell from any material they so wished. The results ranged from plasticine, clay, cardboard and polystyrene through to gelatine and even cake. Unfortunately for the latter two, the gelatine model lasted a day and the cake model was enjoyed by year 8 science teacher Mr Ingles.

The subjects captured were all manner of cells from white and red blood cells to nerve cells to skin cells. Students were then asked to evaluate how well their model communicate the cells structure and discuss the limitations of their medium.

“Overall, the models were really well done,” says science teacher Matt Ingles, “They allowed the students to engage creatively with the content and got the students to consider how to best communicate a scientific idea.”
