Year 7 German Makes Apfelstrudel

Apple Strudel

Year 7 German are complimenting their unit on the kitchen (or die Küche) by making a European specialty – apple strudel (Apfelstrudel).

Overseen by Patrick Lane (der Führer), the students made the Austrian dessert from tinned apples, brown sugar and cinnamon. Though the dessert is traditionally made with filo pastry, the class used puff pastry for the sake of convenience.

The dessert is popular throughout the former Austro-Hungarian empire. The dish traces its origins to Turkish baklava and is served with whipped cream, ice cream or in Year 7’s case, custard.

This activity was the perfect antidote to a term spent working on learning about food in German. The students have been building their vocabulary around the kitchen, learning to express which foods they like and dislike and learning quantities.

“Learning another language helps your job prospects and it’s fun,” explains German teacher Aleescha Croxon, “You open up your world to different foods and traditions and it makes you a better communicator overall.”

Year 7 will continue learning about cuisine through to the end of the term. Thanks for your help, Mr Lane!
