To celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child, Soroptimist Griffith invited girls from across Griffith to participate in their Enable Empower workshop today.
The customised workshop was delivered by Burn Bright who are a not-for-profit organisation that deliver student leadership and wellbeing programs. Throughout the day, the girls focused on enhancing their emotional intelligence, building positive self-expression and confidence, identifying personal values, building capacity and fostering resilience.
“We’re targeting future leaders to help them have their voices heard,” explains Soroptimist Libby Trembath, “We want them to feel empowered to make their world a better place for girls and women.”
Between conversations the students also participated in all manner of fun. Team building games like ninja/hunter/bear, making up their own secret handshakes and back-to-back drawing challenges had the girls build interpersonal relationships and enabled them to network with fellow young leaders.
The last session of the day had the students planning and implementing a self-lead group project to be actioned when they return to school.
“The project empowers the girls to make change,” Libby explains, “I know there were conversations around period hygiene, access to school for adolescent women around the world and equity and access to STEM education. It will be really interesting to see some of the ideas that come from the session.”
“We’ve made a lot of progress with female leadership and the female voice,” explains Mrs Trembath, “But there are still a lot of barriers to break. There definitely needs to be a balance of women in leadership. Women and girls bring a different perspective to decision making.”
The Soroptimists will continue to aid the girls with the implementation of their self-lead projects. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!
