Science Diorama-rama

Dioramas

Murrumbidgee is in a state of diora-mania with both our Year 8 and Year 9 Science classes creating scenes from ecosystems and disaster zones.

Year 8 were tasked with creating a three-dimensional representation of an ecosystem to illustrate their unit on the subject. The class submitted depictions of everything from oceans to savannahs to rainforests.

Meanwhile Year 9 have been covering disasters. But rather than explore the disasters themselves, the class instead examined the environmental recovery after a disaster. The students recreated scenes from the post Thailand tsunami landscape, the Western Front after the First World War, Chernobyl and the ever-topical post bushfire rejuvenation.

“I like the idea that the students have to research the information themselves and learn from doing things hands on,” explains Year 8 and 9 Science teacher Wendy Murwood, “They also have to pull information from own experiences and elsewhere, so I enjoy facilitating that type of education.”

Year 8 and 9 will continue studying ecosystems and disasters through to the end of the term.
