Captains Acknowledge Sacrifice of Indigenous ANZACS at Assembly

ANZAC Assembly

Today our student leadership team acknowledged the sacrifices our ANZACs made at a special ANZAC Day assembly with a special emphasis on the contributions of Indigenous ANZACS.

“ANZAC Day is a time of reflection, remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealand soldiers,” declared vice-captain Paige Sergi, “It is a day when we honour the courage, resilience and service of those who fought in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions.”

“However, for too long, the contributions of Indigenous peoples-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women- have been overlooked,” Ms Sergi continued, “Despite facing discrimination at home and legal barriers to enlistment, many Indigenous people volunteered to serve, fighting with the same bravery and loyalty as their non-Indigenous comrades.”

The assembly went into detail about the exclusion of veterans benefits and denial of land grants for Indigenous ANZACs upon returning from war. It also sought to acknowledge the mateship, resilience and sacrifice of Indigenous ANZACS.

On top of observing the minutes silence, the last post and Ode of Remembrance, our captains also read out a poem Wade ALEC Head Teacher Andrée Bellamy wrote to the Governor General about the sacrifices of the Lovett Family.

Thank you to our Student Leadership and teacher Maddy Murdoch for putting together such a powerful memorial for our ANZACs.
