Year 8 English Explore Sustainability and the Environment

Year 8 English

Year 8 English have been trying to fix the world’s problems through creative writing. The class have been creating hypothetical green communities and drafting letters to council for their Sustainability and the Environment unit.

The students were tasked with creating a multimedia presentation about a sustainable community that they had made up. The class created slide shows and drew maps to bring these green utopias to life. One team even put together a short film on Canva.

The second part of the assignment challenged the class to bring these grand ideas into the real world. Using their hypothetical communities as a model, the class drafted letters to local council about how Griffith could be more environmentally conscious.

“Most of the time when you buy a bottle of water, you only use it once before it gets thrown out,” Saskia Nolan explains, “My letter explored changing the attitudes of people towards plastic waste.”

“My letter was about green waste,” adds Kate Parker, “I proposed we could have a community compost plant where all of the waste from green bins goes. Council could even make money off selling the compost.”

The assignment is part of the Premier’s cross curricular unit Sustainability and the Environment. Students have also been watching The War on Waste and studying blue zones, which are regions where people live longer than average.

The class will now move on to study short studies in the coming term.
