Year 10 and 11 Take a New Approach to Maths

Maths

Year 10 and Year 11 have been experimenting with new ways of learning Maths by employing cutting edge research from academic Peter Liljedahl.

The students have been working though numeracy exercises, trigonometric proofs and exam feedback using strategies from Liljedahl’s Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. Students have been on their feet, working on white boards in randomly assigned groups with a single pen between them.

“The students have been much more engaged working this way,” explains Maths teacher Leanne Tregea, “The class has to collaborate to work out solutions to problems and can easily erase mistakes without fear of judgment.”

“Some students disengage with traditional pen and paper maths or mimic the teacher’s solution rather than think more deeply about the concept,” adds Mrs Tregea, “But with this technique, there has been a marked improvement in results.”
