Wade Holds Harry Dingle Memorial Assembly

Harry Dingle

At our assembly on Monday April 8 we gathered to honour the memory of Second Lieutenant Harry Dingle, a farmer from Hanwood, who displayed exceptional bravery during his service in World War 1. Second Lieutenant Dingle was awarded the Military Medal for his courageous acts on the battlefield.

Our school captains read the following:

“You may have noticed the painting of Harry Dingle on the Gem Hotel, paying tribute to his service during WW1. Originally from Sydney, he excelled in swimming and Rugby Union before moving to Griffith in 1913 where he purchased Farm 55 in Hanwood. In 1915, he made the decision to enlist, serving with the Light Horse Field Ambulance at Gallipoli.

Throughout his service, Harry Dingle demonstrated unwavering courage, especially during the battle of Pozieres in France. It was there, in August 1916, that he earned the Military Medal for his tireless efforts in rescuing wounded soldiers despite heavy shell fire. His dedication led to a field promotion to Second Lieutenant by December 1916.

Tragically, on 19th February 1917, while instructing soldiers on hand grenades, a fatal accident occurred resulting in his untimely passing the following day. His legacy of selflessness and commitment to his comrades was acknowledged in reports of his death in June 1917.

In remembrance of Second Lieutenant Harry Dingle and all those who have sacrificed for our country, we ask you to join us in paying respects at the Anzac Day March on 25th April.

Please assemble in school uniform at the Griffith RSL Sub-Branch building next to the Gem Hotel at 10:00am. Together, as school captains of Murrumbidgee Regional High School - Wade, we will lead our school carrying the flags of Australia, New South Wales, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

May we never forget the brave men and women who served and continue to serve in times of conflict.

Lest we forget”
