Year 8 have combined ceramics and their wildest dreams to build their latest aquatic creations.
The class are currently studying the unit Living in a Fantasy World, which encourages the students to explore surrealism and their imaginations. Their first assignment had them build amulets imbued with magical powers from oven bake clay. The class had to exercise their fine motor skills and creativity to complete the charms.
Some of the amulets offered protection to the wearer while others were charged with superpowers. Others still (specifically Dustin’s) ensured that the kebab shop was still open after school finished so that the wearer could buy a kebab.
The class then moved onto create their crazy fish. They used pinch pots as the basis for their creations, supplementing coil and slab where needed. The design process was essential to preparing the monsters, as the students had to engineer solutions to structural problems in their creations.
“Ceramics is a very tactile form of art that engages pretty much all the kids,” explains Art teacher Sarah Dollin, “The kids love working with their hands and we find they get more involved and become more engaged when they are working in three dimensions.”
The class have since moved onto experiment with Asian artforms and are working towards creating a final artwork using acrylics, inks and watercolours.
