Year 9 Experiment With Studio Lighting

Studio Lighting

Our Year 9 Photography students were experimenting with light and shadow in the studio last week.

The class have been working on a unit on portraiture and decided to employ various lighting techniques to affect their images. The Year 9s used two studio flashes to create Rembrandt, butterfly, loop, studio, flat and split lighting.

“The students were initially reluctant to get in front of the camera,” explains photography teacher Sarah Dollin, “but they ended up thrilled with the results.”

“Because of the effect it can have on a photograph’s mood and because of the way different lighting techniques accentuate different features,” continues Mrs Dollin, “It’s good to be across a range of different studio lighting techniques.”

The class will move onto their unit on environment and place, which will explore photographing landscapes and the built environment.
