Three Aspiring Photographers Capture the Athletics Carnival

Photography Competition

Three lucky students Alanna, Jasmine and Stephanie were rewarded with a chance to photograph the school athletics carnival after winning an in-class photography competition.

The students were challenged to recreate the alphabet using found shapes, carefully framed to look like letters. The class then had to create a word, no longer than seven letters, which was scored according to scrabble rules. The students with the three highest scores were declared the winners.

“The kids get to develop their creative problem solving skills and independent thinking from an exercise like this,” explains photography teacher Sarah Dollin, “It changes the way they view the world in terms of composition and it also helps their visual literacy.”

The winners of the competition were Alanna King with her word zigzag (26 points), Stephanie Hyder with wheezy (24 points) and Jasmine Netphrom with oxidize (24 points).

The students were then each loaned a camera to go and photograph the athletics carnival, producing an array of dazzling action filled shots and developing their abilities as photojournalists.

“It was interesting to see their athletics day photos. The kids came back to me talking about some of the things they had learned on the day. They realised the sheer quantity of photos that they needed to take to get a good shot, but overall they were really excited to show me some of the great photos they took."

You can see girls’ collages and the photos they took of the athletics carnival below.
