Ag Students Explore Aquaculture

Aquaculture

Our Agriculture students have been exploring aquaculture after a generous donation of fingerlings from Aquna Murray Cod.

The setup works by pumping the water, filled with fish excreta, into the soil above. The plants then remove the fish waste and effectively filter the water, which is then sent back down to the Murray cod below.

The cod are enclosed in repurposed chemical shuttles provided by Elders Griffith. Our Year 11 Primary Industries students cut the top section off and installed the aquaculture pumps themselves.

The young aquaculturists have planted strawberries and a selection of herbs which will be used by our Hospitality students. The fish will also meet the same fate when they’re raised to size.

“The between the fish and the warm weather, the plants are really flourishing,” remarks Agriculture teacher Mark Duncan, “But at the end of the day, we’re just happy to be doing cod’s work.”
