Last Thursday both our Open Boys and Girls Touch teams went off to compete against some of the region’s best players at the Wagga Gala Day.
The boys came up against some tough competition right off the bat, going down by a single try to Mt Austin and then again to Coolamon in the following game. The boys clicked into gear for their third game against Yanco, beating the Agricultural College 8 – 3.
In their final match of the day our boys came up against the pool’s number one team. Although game was try for try in the first ten minutes, Leeton ended up running away with the win 8 – 3.
“The skill level of the boys was very impressive overall,” explains team coach Nigel Plum, “but it was Christian Callcut’s speed that provided the team with try scoring opportunities.”
Across the field, our girls team proved unstoppable, ending the day undefeated in their pool. They kicked off the day with a win against age old rivals MRHS – Griffith (5-2), following that up with a series absolutely jaw dropping victories against Mt Austin (12 – 0), Leeton (9-0), Tumbarumba (7-1) and finally Yanco Ag (10 – 0).
Captain Tess Jamieson and players Daisy O’Connor, Ellie Matthews and Milly Aitken were outstanding throughout the day. Year 7s Ruby Kenny and Milla Menegazzo also managed to hold their own against players up to five years older than them and still scored tries.
“It was a very hot and long day,” recounts coach Jessy McRae, “But the team showed excellent grace and sportsmanship in every game. I’m very proud of the way they represented the school.”
The Open Girls team won Pool B and will now go on to play the semi-finals in Wagga against Kooringal High School.
