Peer Support Returns to Wade

Peer Support

This year Wade is dusted off our Peer Support program to help our Year 7s adapt to the brave new world of high school.

The peer support program is fondly remembered by former Wade students and is an opportunity for our students to generate connections beyond their own year group. It fosters a sense of belonging among the student population, improves confidence and helps students build social and emotional skills.

Our Year 11 volunteers will guide five to seven Year 7 students through the trials and tribulations of high school twice a term. The group will discuss issues around resilience, kindness and wellbeing and build lifelong friendships throughout the sessions.

The program was brought to the school after Girls Advisor Bec Chapman had seniors ask her about creating opportunities for older students to reach out to younger students. Teacher Mikaela Coates then took it on herself to put the plan into action.

“I’m hoping peer support will help the Year 7s feel more confident with older students,”  explains Miss Coates, “I think it will also be a good opportunity for our Year 11s to step up into leadership positions.”

The program will continue throughout the year. Well done to our 26 Year 11 volunteers for stepping up to the challenge.
