Year 9 Explore the Lost Art of Letter Writing

Year 9 Letter Writing

Year 9 have put their lessons on correspondence into effect by writing and mailing their friends a letter.

The English class have been taking a lesson on persuasive writing this term and have been studying famous speeches from world renowned orators Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. As part of the unit, they have also been exploring the lost art of letter writing. The class learned all about both formal and personal letters and the structural differences between the two.

To consolidate the lesson, teacher Mr Maley challenged the class to write and then post a letter to a friend. It might be a skill that we take for granted, but for Generation Alpha, the novelty of addressing envelopes and affixing stamps brought the students great delight.

“Once we started talking about letter writing in class, a lot of the students had a latent desire to send and receive letters but didn’t necessarily have the foundation to do it,” explains teacher Martin Maley.

“They had no idea how stamps worked,” added Mr Maley, “And were surprised by how expensive they were.”

After enclosing their letters and addressing and stamping their envelopes, the class took a mini excursion to the nearest Australia Post box at the driver shopping centre to mail their letters. The recipients can expect to receive them in the next few days.
